In the past, strength coaches at every level—high school, college and professional—have lacked an online platform where they could share information and ideas with their peers. The Strength Performance Network changed all of that.
Founded in July 2008 by Brian Harris and his brother David, both former senior co-captains of their college football teams (Brian was a defensive back at Carnegie Melon and David played linebacker for Holy Cross), the Strength Performance Network is a free social network site designed especially for strength coaches.
“We provide a forum for strength and conditioning professionals to educate each other,” says Brian. “It’s not all about lifting weights. It’s strength performance, or how the hard work you’re doing is going to help you perform better on the field of play.”
To be eligible, you must be a strength coach, but once you join, you are able to post videos and participate in forums. The site already has 7,000 members, representing 260 colleges and universities and numerous professional teams—including ones from the MLB, NHL, NBA and NFL. The site even includes job postings for members to find new opportunities.
One thing the site does not provide is a soapbox for the Harris brothers to spout their opinions on training. “There’s no right way,” says Brian. “People come to our site because there are always ways you can evolve.”
The site will be giving out its inaugural College Coach’s Choice Award on Sept. 2 at the Georgia Dome, the night before the Georgia Bulldogs take on the Boise State Broncos to kickstart the college football season. All five nominees were selected by their peers on the site, but voting is open to anyone. Voting ends on Aug. 31, so check back on the STACK Blog for more info on the finalists.
