Captain America, Iron Man to Co-Lead in ‘Avengers 2’
Captain America and Iron Man will lead the way in the upcoming Avengers sequel, according to Marvel Studios Co-President Louis D’Esposito. Tony Stark’s mindset is still a little fragile following the events of Iron Man 3, but Captain America will be there when the other Avengers look for a leader.
“Well, [Tony Stark is] leading the team with Captain America and … I don’t know where he’s at 100 percent,” D’Esposito told IGN. “We’re still developing the screenplay, and Joss Whedon is writing furiously to get that finished, but obviously I’ve seen a couple of drafts.”
Last we saw, Stark had completely destroyed his Iron Man armor in an attempt to fully commit to a life with girlfriend Pepper Potts. But D’Esposito says there might be reason to think the billionaire genius is up to his old tricks once again.
“It’s hard for me to say at this point what he is doing and what his emotional mindset is, but you can see where it was at the end of Iron Man 3. He’s in love with Pepper, he’s made a grand gesture to blow up the suit at that point, but at the end he couldn’t help himself. I think he will go back to tinkering—that’s what he does,” D’Esposito said.
The reveal seems to bolster rumors that Stark will be the creator of the next film’s main villain, Ultron. But another popular theory is that Cap and Iron Man will lead two separate Avengers teams that work together. The Winter Soldier, which hits theaters April 4, 2014, should answer some of the questions.
Avengers: Age of Ultron will premiere May 1, 2015.
