‘Captain America’ Sequel to be Political Thriller?
Captain America: Winter Solider will reportedly eschew the typical Marvel action-packed fare for a more political plot.
During an interview with Variety, Marvel executive Kevin Feige said two things: one, that espionage will play a role in the upcoming sequel, and two, that fans shouldn’t view the new influx of comic-book films as merely a passing fad. “If it is a fad, it’s one that lasts 30 to 40 years, as the Western did, because each one is so different,” said Feige. “There’s an opportunity to graft almost sub-genres onto them. Our first Captain America film was a World War II picture, and the next is a political thriller. They all have their own textures and patinas, and that’s what is exciting about it.”
In Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, will team up with Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. and fellow superhero Falcon. At first, many assumed the film would follow the traditional plot line, but in light of the new information, it’s likely the movie will delve into the super soldier’s sense of morality and how it often puts him at odds with the U.S. government.
If you like traditional plots, the movie will probably not completely abandon the format that brought fans into theaters the first time around. Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon in the flick, has described it as “fun.” Emily VanCamp and Frank Grillo have joined the cast as love interest Sharon Carter and villain Crossbones, respectively. Sebastian Stan will play Winter Solider Bucky Barnes, the brainwashed cyborg assassin that wreaks havoc on the world.
Winter Soldier is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2014.
