David Oyelowo (Selma) and Kate Mara (House of Cards) will share the screen in the true crime thriller Captive, based on the book Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero, by Ashley Smith with Stacey Mattingly. The story chronicles what happened when Smith, a single mother and recovering drug addict, was held hostage in her own apartment by alleged rapist Brian Nichols.
The film also stars Michael K. Williams (The Gambler), Mimi Rogers (The Wedding Ringer), Leonor Varela (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Michael Mercaldi (Secrets and Lies), and Oyelowo’s real-life wife Jessica Oyelowo, known for the 2010 family movie Alice in Wonderland.
The screenplay was written by veteran writer Brian Bird (TV’s Touched by an Angel and the 2013 film The Ultimate Life). The movie was directed by Jerry Jameson, who is best known for directing popular TV series Magnum P.I. and Walker, Texas Ranger.
In a press release, producer Alex Garcia said, “Jerry Jameson has done a fantastic job bringing to life Ashley Smith’s harrowing ordeal and miraculous redemption, and Kate Mara portrays her with phenomenal sensitivity and poignancy.”
Captive hits theaters nationwide on September 18.
