Major League Baseball’s All-Stars, Gold Glovers and Cy Young Award winners sought out the toughest competition in their youth. Doing so helped catapult them to the elite ranks. Likewise, today’s young players are pushing themselves to excel by competing against the best the game has to offer, as well as gaining exposure in different venues. Thanks to Stars and Stripes Baseball, players ages nine to 18 now have opportunities to challenge the nation’s best.
The program started in 2009 with teams in South Carolina populated by players ages 10 to 18. Players attended a tryout and 10 teams, one in each age group, were created to compete in a tournament in Columbia and the Winter World Championships in Florida.
Since then the program has grown. Currently 20 states have embraced Stars and Stripes Baseball. In those states, two teams in each age group, ages nine to 18, are chosen—a Stars Team and a Stripes Team. The Stars and Stripes play in two local tournaments, then travel to Orlando to take on national competition the day after Christmas, making it an experience of a lifetime for the players.
Players who live in states without a program can attend tryouts in adjoining states, or try out for the American Team, which is made up of players from all over the country.
Stars and Stripes baseball players benefit from fine coaching. Many of the state directors have professional experience, and they provide independent evaluations of every player who tries out. Teams are led by pro players, past or present college athletes, or high school head coaches. This allows growing baseball players to learn the game from those who have made it to the promised land and beyond.
