Robot Flick ‘Chappie’ Features Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman
Chappie features an all-star cast that includes Hugh Jackman and Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel.
The sci-fi adventure film from Columbia follows the ups and downs of the title character, an experimental humanoid robot who has the ability to think and feel. Kidnapped by criminals during “birth,” he eventually finds a home when he is adopted by an eccentric and dysfunctional family. As a child he is impressionable when it comes to his surroundings. A gifted prodigy, Chappie is set apart from the crowd in more ways than one. This part human-part machine hybrid faces many struggles as he grows into manhood, but he promises to pave the way to changing the world’s perception of robots and people forever.
Starring as Chappie is Sharlto Copley, who was last seen on the big screen in the hit fantasy Maleficent. Patel plays the young scientist responsible for the Artificial Inteligence breakthrough. Jackman is cast against type as a hostile anti-A.I. emissary intent on destroying Chappie. The cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Brandon Auret (Elysium) and Robert Hobbs (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom).
The film was written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, best known for writing and directing the high-profile sci-fi features District 9 and Elysium. Blomkamp collaborated on the screenplay with writing partner and wife Terri Tatchell.
Chappie will be released in theaters nationwide on March 6, 2015.
