Rap News Rundown: Chief Keef, Hopsin, Q-Tip, Lil Wayne
Last week, Chief Keef puffed his freedom away, Hopsin considered giving up the mic, Q-Tip denounced Kanye’s use of the Confederate flag, and Turk reached out to some of his former homies like Lil Wayne and received radio silence.
Chief Keef Headed to Rehab in California
Chief Keef’s inability to lay off marijuana has him headed to rehab. Last week, a judge ordered the 18-year-old to attend a 90-day drug treatment program after failing three random drug tests. The tests are a part of a plea deal the Chicago rapper reached with prosecutors after he was arrested for speeding earlier this year.
Keef will reportedly attend one of the Promises Treatment Centers in California at his own expense. In the past, these drug treatment facilities have served as the go-to place for many celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. After his stint in Cali, Keef will have to report back to Chicago to complete 60 hours of community service at an equestrian center. His next court date is Dec. 12.
Hopsin Unravels During a Twitter Rant
Hopsin took to Twitter last week to vent about the music industry. He threatened to leak his upcoming LP, Knock Madness, which hits shelves Nov. 26, and warned fans against becoming an MC. “Don’t become a rapper. You will become a zombie if you do. I should have been a porn star,” wrote the Cali rapper.
A few of Hopsin’s tweets took on a bleak tone. “If there was ever a day I was gonna blow my brains out, it would be today for sure,” he tweeted. “I was thinking about leaving after my album dropped and I toured, but I just might do it today.”
Q-Tip Criticizes Kanye West’s Use of the Confederate Flag
Not everyone is embracing Kanye West’s decision to feature the Confederate flag on some of his tour merchandise. G.O.O.D. Music labelmate Q-Tip recently spoke out about the controversy, saying the flag continues to hold a negative connotation despite Kanye’s intentions. “No shots, but my people continue to suffer psychologically from hardships that happened under that banner,” tweeted Tip.
During an interview with AMP Radio, Kanye defended his use of the flag by calling it a representation of his single “New Slaves.” “The Confederate flag represented slavery in a way. That’s my abstract take on what I know about it, right? So I wrote the song, ‘New Slaves.’ So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It’s my flag now. Now what you gonna do?” he exclaimed.
Turk Calls out Cash Money’s Lil Wayne & Others
Former Hot Boys member Turk lost his father late last month after he was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver. In a recent video, he accused his one-time labelmates of turning their backs on him when he needed them most. He called out Baby, Slim, Wayne and Mannie Fresh in particular, revealing that he reached out to them several times without a response. Even after the video received wide coverage, he released another clip claiming that they still hadn’t reached out.
“I know they on the road, I know they doing their own thing. But it’s been a week. I haven’t gotten a phone call. I was just reaching out in the best way and the only way I knew how at the time. I still haven’t had a phone call,” he said. “I wasn’t asking them to send me no money or anything.”
