Feature film thriller The Finest Hours, starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, is based on the true story of an inspirational Coast Guard rescue during the winter of 1952, when New England was struck by one of the worst storms ever to hit the East Coast.

During the storm, an oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod was ripped in half. Four members of the Coast Guard set out on a small lifeboat and faced 70-foot waves and frigid temperatures to rescue more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel. Re-creating this heroic mission, the movie is an adaptation of the book by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman, titled The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue.

The Walt Disney production co-stars Ben Foster and Eric Bana, who previously shared the screen in the military drama Lone Survivor. The cast also includes Kyle Gallner (American Sniper), Beau Knapp (Super 8), Graham McTavish (The Hobbit franchise), Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards) and Holliday Grainger, best known for the 2013 TV miniseries Bonnie and Clyde.

The film was directed by Craig Gillespie, whose most recent movie was the sports biopic Million Dollar Arm. The screenplay was written by collaborators Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy of the big screen sports drama, The Fighter.

The Finest Hours will be released in 3D/2D theaters and IMAX on Jan. 29, 2016.
