Is CJ Coming to ‘GTA V’?
An innocuous statement made by the actor voicing Grand Theft Auto V‘s Franklin has taken the Internet by storm.
During the IGN GTA V panel at New York Comic Con, the actors behind Michael, Franklin and Trevor were asked which other video game character they wished they had voiced. Shawn ‘Solo’ Fonteno responded that he would have loved to have voiced Carl “CJ” Johnson, the main character in 2004’s GTA: San Andreas. But then he said he wasn’t too disappointed since he and Young Malay, who voiced CJ, are now working together on a project. Perhaps realizing that he said too much, he dodged further questioning on the subject.
Of course, Fonteno could have been referring to a separate project involving him and Young Malay, like a song or a movie. But he might have unintentionally leaked that CJ will return to the series via Los Santos. It wouldn’t be the first time an old character reappeared. In the past, Rockstar Games has re-introduced characters via DLC, such as in GTA IV‘s “The Ballad of Gay Tony.”
Rockstar has previously stated that the San Andreas storyline doesn’t exist in the present GTA world. But it wouldn’t be hard to include CJ. Grove Street, his old stomping ground, is included in the game—albeit without his old home. If he did return, however, we’d get an older version of the PlayStation 2 character. His story ended with his getting revenge and becoming a very wealthy man.
Thus far, the developer has not confirmed any plans to include CJ in a forthcoming DLC.
