What Does the Coast Guard Do?
In the Coast Guard, no two days are ever alike. On any given day, the Coast Guard will:

• Save 12 lives
• Keep 842 pounds of cocaine off the streets
• Respond to 64 search and rescue cases
• Investigate 12 marine accidents

In addition to its daily duties, the Coast Guard responds to emergencies across the globe. In 2010 alone, members of the Coast Guard helped with the Haiti earthquake, Deepwater Horizon explosion and Tennessee flooding. They also made an $80 million cocaine bust in the Caribbean, did research in the Arctic and enforced security for the Olympics outside of Canada.
Other Opportunities
The Coast Guard presents a number of unique opportunities for those who aren’t looking for a full-time career. If you’re not interested in enlisting, but still want an opportunity to serve, consider one of the following options:

• Coast Guard Reserve – Members of the Coast Guard Reserve serve one weekend per month and two weeks each year. Because Reservists complete the same jobs as active duty personnel, the Reserve is ideal for those who want to work a full-time civilian job but get a taste of the Coast Guard experience.
• Civilian Operations – For those looking for a career in the Coast Guard without enlisting, a civilian job is perfect. Today, the Coast Guard has more than 6,000 civilians serving in over 200 support roles.
• Auxiliary – The 30,000-member Coast Guard Auxiliary plays an important role guarding waterways and educating the public. Men and women ages 17 and up can volunteer for the Coast Guard Auxiliary and pursue their passion in their free time.
