Reebok Signs Its Youngest Hockey Player Ever
Reebok has signed 15-year-old hockey phenom Connor McDavid to a multi-year sponsorship deal covering both apparel and equipment.
The details surrounding the contract are not currently available; however, according to the SportsBusiness Journal, the deal will span five years and net the teenage athlete several million dollars. It will also make McDavid the youngest hockey player ever to endorse Reebok, beating Sidney Crosby, who endorsed Reebok when he was just 17 years old.
“We want to align with the best in the world, and we believe Connor McDavid is in that class,” Glenn Thornborough, Reebok CCM vice president of global marketing, told SportsBusiness Journal. “I won’t get into the terms of it, but it would obviously extend into when and if he is in the National Hockey League.”
“It is not an everyday occurrence in the industry that a player like Connor comes along,” added Thornborough. “We are not in the habit of signing kids that age, but there are special occurrences, and this is one.”
McDavid currently plays for the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League. He was the third 15-year-old allowed to join the league and the overall top pick during the draft. He hasn’t disappointed in his rookie year, either; he is currently 10 points ahead of all other rookies in scoring.
Connor McDavid will not be eligible to play in the NHL until 201; however, you can check out some of his highlights below. Want to watch on-ice highlights from another young phenom? Check out STACK’s video shoot with 2012 NHL #1 draft pick Nail Yakupov.[youtube video=”BGDJvFBOH_A” /]
