Carter High School in Dallas, Texas, lacks the lavish weight room and multi-million-dollar football complex boasted by many of the state’s powerhouse football programs.
What Carter does have is a rich tradition of success, and as coach Patrick Williams likes to say, “tradition never graduates.”
For that reason, Williams, a Carter alumnus and running back for the 1988 state championship team popularized in the film, Friday Night Lights, returned in 2011 to lead the program.
After assembling a coaching staff replete with other Carter football alumni, Williams made it his mission to impart the values of “Carter Pride” to his players.
Simply put, Carter Pride is the code of the Carter football team. Williams says, “It stands for community, hard work, love, service, teamwork and integrity. Behind everything they do, they have to have pride. What we want them to have is Carter Pride. We have a tradition of producing successful football players, and we have a responsibility to uphold that tradition.”
