Dallas Suburb Approves $62.8 Million High School Football Stadium, Expected To Be The Most Expensive in History
In case you haven’t heard by now, high school football is a big deal in Texas.
Like, $62 million stadiums big.
The residents of McKinney, Texas have voted to approve issuance of a bond that will allow the school district to fund the construction of a new 12,000-seat football stadium with an estimated price tag of $62.8 million. According to USA Today, that would make it the most expensive high school football stadium in the country.
Currently, McKinney’s three high schools (McKinney North, McKinney Boyd and McKinney High) share a 7,000-seat stadium that was built in 1962. The new stadium is currently scheduled to open in 2017.
Perhaps the craziest part of this story is that high school stadiums of this magnitude are becoming the norm in Texas. Allen Independent School District in Allen, Texas recently constructed an 18,000-seat stadium at a cost of nearly $60 million; and Katy Independent School District in Katy, Texas is currently constructing a 12,000-seat stadium that’s estimated to run $62 million.
Never has the phrase “everything’s bigger in Texas” seemed more appropriate. Check out renderings of McKinney’s colossal new stadium below:
