Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti Headline Showtime Series ‘Billions’
The pilot episode of the Showtime series Billions, set in the world of high finance, stars Emmy Award winners Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. Lewis plays the brilliant hedge-fund manager Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, who goes head to head with hard-charging U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhodes, played by Giamatti. Centering on these two larger-than-life figures, the series chronicles the approaching collision between them while exploring the inner workings of Wall Street.
Writing and executive producing the series is an impressive team, including the screenwriting duo Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) and Andrew Ross Sorkin, author of the financial crisis exposé Too Big to Fail.
Neil Burger, best known for directing Divergent, will direct the pilot.
Lewis had one of his biggest successes at Showtime, playing the role of U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Nicholas Brody in Homeland for two years. Since leaving that show in 2013, he has kept busy, appearing in several feature films and playing the iconic role of Henry VIII in the mini-series Wolf Hall. Lewis is set to play General William Sherman in the much-delayed Civil War mini-series Appomattox.
Giamatti will soon be seen as Jerry Heller in the big screen feature Straight Outta Compton. Over the past few years, in addition to his success in feature films, he has been focusing on television dramas. One of his most notable TV roles was as Ben Bernanke in the small screen adaptation of Sorkin’s Too Big to Fail.
Billions is expected to begin filming in New York in early 2015.
