David Tennant Takes Villain Role in ‘Jessica Jones’ Series
Former “Doctor Who” star David Tennant will take on the villainous role of Zebediah Kilgrave/Purple Man in Marvel’s upcoming Jessica Jones series for Netflix. Like other castmates who have been announced—Krysten Ritter in the title role and Mike Colter as Luke Cage—Tennant has a strong background in television. In addition to the wildly popular Doctor Who, the Scottish actor has worked on many series over the years, and he is currently starring as Alec Hardy in the UK crime series Broadstreet.
An enigmatic character, Kilgrave emerges from Jones’s past and turns her world upside down. An enemy of Jones and Cage beginning in the 2000’s, this bad boy comes back into the superhero’s life during a challenging time. Not only is she transitioning into a new career as a private eye with her own detective agency, but Jones is still trying to cope with PTSD.
Originating in the Daredevil comics in 1964, Kilgrave formerly worked in espionage and at one point led a band of criminals. His superpower is the ability to control people in close proximity to him with the sound of his voice. The skill is compared to the practice of hypnosis, but it is so effective it is almost impossible to resist. He can even control several people at the same time. However, when they are out of his presence, they are able to regain their own will.
With a commitment of at least 13 episodes from the streaming service, the series will premiere some time in 2015.
