Davis Webb Sums Up His Love For The Deep Ball in 5 Words: ‘Scared Money Don’t Make Money’
Davis Webb is picking up serious momentum as an NFL prospect.
After impressive showings at the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine, the 6-foot-5, 229-pound quarterback is now being projected as a potential first-round pick. One NFL exec recently said Webb would end up being the best quarterback of the entire draft class.
One reason Webb is suddenly climbing draft boards? His knack for the deep ball. The NFL is a passing league, and a quarterback who can regularly connect on big throws can vitalize an offense. According to Pro Football Focus, 18 of Webb’s touchdown passes last season traveled at least 20 yards in the air. Webb’s not shy about his big arm, either. He recently told Bleacher Report that he “can throw it 75 yards in the air with ease.”
STACK recently visited with Webb, and the conversation naturally shifted to his penchant for deep balls. “One of my favorite sayings is, ‘Scared money don’t make money.’ I like to throw the deep ball, that’s what football is all about,” Webb told STACK. “You want 6 points. Our offense at Cal, we liked to throw the ball pretty deep.”
That quote is undeniably amazing. Webb’s referenced a popular rap lyric, which has been used by artists like Young Jeezy, Meek Mill and Q-Tip. Webb’s confidence can be a huge asset at the quarterback position, as it allows him to complete passes some other QBs would never even attempt.
Walk off quote from Davis Webb: “I’ve always been 6-5, 230 pounds and can throw the ball better than anybody.” Gotta love it.

One of Webb’s favorite deep ball plays at Cal was “Green Rock Lucky Option.” While the inside receivers run 15-yard hitches, the outside receivers have an “Option” route where they run downfield 10-12 yards, then decide whether they have a chance to blow by the defensive back. If they do, they go for it and continue to get vertical downfield. That play accounted for a ton of points and yardage in Cal’s “Bear Raid” offense.
Webb told STACK: “I love that play. Chad Hansen was probably the best in the country at it last year. He caught a lot of touchdowns off ‘Option.’ Demetris Robertson, he was a true freshman, I would say 99 percent of his yards were on ‘Option.’ We like throwing the ball deep. We like touchdowns.”
Webb’s favorite execution of the play came in the second quarter of Cal’s game against Texas. Trailing 33-28 with the ball on the 23-yard line, Webb dropped back and uncorked a majestic ball that found Hansen’s hands in the back right corner of the end zone.
The play gave Cal a lead heading into halftime, and they ultimately won the shootout by a score of 50-43. Check out more impressive long throws from Webb in this highlight tape:
