The trailer for the long-awaited Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been released.

The plot picks up about 10 years after the events that unfolded in 2011’s Planet of the Apes reboot. The experimental Alzheimer’s drug ALZ-113 has wiped out most of the human population. A band of survivors has struck up a “fragile peace” with genetically evolved apes led by Caesar, according to the film’s official synopsis. But the truce doesn’t last long “as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.”

“We spent four years fighting that virus. And then another four fighting each other. It was chaos. But you all know what we’re up against. I want you to know it’s not just about power; it’s about giving us the hope to rebuild and reclaim the world we lost,” says Dreyfus (played by Gary Oldman).

If you watched the earlier movies, you know who wins the war. But even if you didn’t—it’s clear that the humans are in a weaker position, and the apes are not only still enraged by their previous treatment but also (at least at first glance) far more determined to protect their way of life.

Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Caesar. But James Franco will not return. The movie will star Oldman, Keri Russell, Jason Clarke, Toby Kebbell and Judy Greer. Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) is taking over the directing duties from Rupert Wyatt, who pulled out due to concerns about the tight schedule.
