NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin's Psychology Tips for Any Sport
Recently in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin beat out Jeff Gordon’s last lap charge to take the lead, racking up his second win in a row. This victory, his fourth of the season, moved him into the number one ranking.
Back in 2011, Hamlin revealed that he had been working with a sports psychologist to improve his attitude and outlook and to break out of his slump. If you are in a slump, use these two tips to improve your game, whether it’s on the track, gym floor or out in the field.
Keep your foot on the gas
Hamlin said, “I really want this one bad.” Every athlete needs to learn to press the pedal to the metal and go for the victory.
Recently, a dirt track driver asked for our help to rediscover the fun of racing. (See How to Maintain Motivation.) When he drove, he was afraid of being passed. With a little mental rewiring, we had him driving faster and more aggressively. He learned to forget the drivers behind him and see only what he needed to do.
Keep your foot off the brake
Jeff Gordon commented that he got soft. In the past he would have pressed Hamlin and moved him up the track, but he didn’t do it. This left him in second place, asking himself the haunting question, “Why didn’t I drive more aggressively?” In NASCAR, or any sport, there is no room for driving soft.
Our driver remembered plenty of times when he didn’t drive his race. We helped him change that. We helped him code his driving strategy in his mind. In that code we made it fun, enjoyable and fast. By the end of the season, he had more wins than he had in the prior two years.
When NASCAR drivers, or any other athletes, find themselves in this situation, it is to their advantage to seek out a qualified Sports Performance Psychology expert to remove the fear of poor performance from their future.
