Gaming Update: ‘Diablo III,’ ‘The Order: 1886,’ ‘Halo IV’
Diablo III will expand with “Reapers of Souls,” but will the pack come to consoles? The Order: 1886 is arriving earlier than expected. Could it start a franchise? And Microsoft is giving Halo IV the “Game of the Year” reatment.
Diablo III “Reaper of Souls” Announced; Coming to Consoles?
During its Gamescon press conference last week, Blizzard announced a new expansion pack for Diablo III. “Reaper of Souls” will revolve around Malthael, the angel of death, who has taken control of Black Soulstone, home of Diablo’s soul. Malthael, who has the ability to siphon off souls, seems to fulfill Blizzard’s promise of a “darker” theme. Blizzard also promised to introduce a new artisan, get rid of the Paragon cap level, and renovate the loot system to prevent players from stockpiling items.
A release date for “Reaper of Souls” hasn’t been announced yet. But gamers hope the expansion will come to consoles in the near feature. (Diablo III will reach consoles on Sept. 3.) During an interview with Polygon, game director Josh Mosqueira teased the possibility, but stopped short of calling it a certainty.
“We’ve got Diablo III on PC, we released it and then a small team splintered off to work on Diablo for the current consoles. Now the team’s really focused on Reaper of Souls for PC,” said Mosqueira. “So if you look at the past, you can probably infer what the future might bring.”
The Order: 1886 Coming in 2014 for PS4
Ready at Dawn Studios’ revision of London history is slated to hit shelves in mid-to-late 2014. The city will have enough reality to be recognizable, with more than its fair share of fiction to immerse gamers in its fantasy. “This Neo-Victorian London will seem familiar to everyone; however, advances in technology will take center stage in many ways as you navigate the city,” wrote creative director Ru Weerasuriya in a post on the official PlayStation blog. “One of the main examples is the advent of electricity throughout the city, well before its time. Gas lamps are replaced with electric street lights. Everywhere you go, you can hear the hum of electricity running through the city.”
During an interview with VG247, Weerasuriya also alluded to the possibility of the game becoming a franchise. Of course, that will depend on the success of this first title. But first impressions are generally positive.
Halo IV Game of the Year Edition Coming in October
The Halo 4 Game of the Year Edition will hit shelves this October. For $49.99, gamers will get digital content previously released through various pre-order bonuses as well as the Halo 4 Limited Edition, Spartan Ops Season 1, War Games Map Pass and Halo 4 Champions Bundle. The news was first announced by IGN, and a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed it with the gaming website shortly thereafter. Said the company in a press release: “A Game of the Year Edition of Halo 4 will be offered this October, offering tremendous value for fans who want to enjoy one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2012, and additional DLC all in one place. We will have more details to share during the live stream of the Halo Global Championship this Sunday [Sept. 1].”
