The 76-year-old ESPN college basketball analyst has energized fans throughout the nation for decades with phrases like “he’s awesome, baby, with a capital A,” when commentating on a player’s elite basketball skills.
Now, in 2016, Vitale is using his enthusiasm to challenge 17-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer to a tennis match.
Federer withdrew from the 2016 French Open last Thursday because of a back injury, ending his streak of 65 consecutive Grand Slam tournament appearances.
With Federer withdrawing from the French Open, Vitale saw a chance to pounce. Vitale recently did a tennis workout, and he proclaims his tennis game is sharp.
Though Federer withdrew from the French Open, he may have to take Vitale up on the challenge. Because the analyst is awesome with a capital A, baby.
