Did This Strange ‘Trick’ Help UFC Champ Daniel Cormier Lose 1.2 Pounds in 1 Minute So He Could Make Weight?
UFC 210 is going down in Buffalo, New York tomorrow night, when UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will defend his title against Anthony Johnson.
The official weigh-ins for the bout were held today. Both fighters had to come in at 205 pounds or less to qualify for the fight. Johnson had no problem, but Cormier is a different story. Just watch:
[youtube video=”pNNfYU_019s”]Cormier first weighed in at 206.2 pounds, which would’ve made him ineligible for the fight. But he got a second chance to weigh in, and—after disappearing behind the stage for under a minute—he somehow weighed in at least 1.2 pounds lighter to successfully make weight.
How the heck did that happen?
Many internet posters seem to believe that Cormier pulled a fast one on his second weigh-in by pushing down on the towel being held in front of him, taking some of his own weight off the scale and “tricking” it into displaying a lighter weight. Check out where his hands were doing the first weigh-in:
Now, check out where Cormier’s hands were during the second weigh-in:
Interesting, right? It wouldn’t take much pressure on that towel to alter the scale reading by a pound or two.
The theory is gaining a lot of traction on social media:
Just did my own experiment & there’s little question Cormier leaned on the towel to make weight. Cheating or exploiting a loophole? Hmm.

Suppose that’s @JonnyBones‘ fault as well, right Cormier? #UFC210 pic.twitter.com/FKmgQFQD7U

@Micky_Irving @Pendred He rests his hands on the towel proper up by others around him- old school wrestling trick https://t.co/r6X4UDqM1s

Did Cormier pull a fast one? It doesn’t matter much now, since he officially made weight and the fight is on for Saturday night.
