In recent years, the hype surrounding several high-profile games was considerably dampened when the titles failed to work properly with some, if not all, gaming platforms. So when Batman: Arkham Knight launched last week, and players immediately began complaining about the PC edition, it wasn’t too alarming at first. Then, the sheer magnitude of the issues made them hard to ignore, and folks began wondering how Warner Bros. failed to notice the bugs prior to the releasing the game?
Based on an anonymous source for gaming site Kokatu, the publisher did know about the problems, but decided to release the game anyway. “I will say that it’s pretty rich for WB to act like they had no idea the game was in such a horrible state,” said the source. “It’s been like this for months and all the problems we see now were the exact same, unchanged, almost a year ago.”
According to the site, WB reasoned that the game was in “good enough” shape to release despite the constant stuttering and the need to cap the frame rate at 30 frames per second. However, Rocksteady appears now to be eating their words. They pulled the PC edition off shelves while they try to “satisfy [their] quality standards,” and released a patch last week to correct several errors. But there is still a lot of work to do.
“Rocksteady is leading our team of developers and partners as we work on the PC performance issues that players have been encountering,” wrote the game’s community manager. “The work is significant, and while we are making good progress on improving performance, it will take some time to ensure that we get the right fixes in place.”
It was not surprising to learn that the company knew about the errors; however, it is disappointing to learn that even with advanced warning, we’re still a long way away from resolution.
