Screenwriter Named for Second ‘Divergent’ Sequel
Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner) will write the second sequel for the big screen adaptation of the Divergent film franchise. Allegiant will be based on Veronica Roth’s third novel in the bestselling series. The story will be split into two parts with Oppenheim writing the first installment.
This movie will follow the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, which is currently filming in Atlanta and is set to release in March 2015.
The dystopian young adult series about people being divided into factions according to individual characteristics, is set in 22nd century Chicago and stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James. In this installment, Tris and Four make the shocking discovery that the world they grew up in might be false and they must make difficult decisions that could have a permanent impact on their lives.
Mostly known for his work as a TV producer (The Buried Life), Oppenheim is making his screenwriting debut with the feature film adaptation of James Dasner’s novel The Maze Runner, another futuristic, YA thriller, similar to Allegiant. His experience with the genre is a plus, but it’s a little surprising that an untested screenwriter would be trusted with such a high-profile project.
The release date for Allegiant: Part I is March 18, 2016, with Part II scheduled for a year later.
