Sofia Vergara, Reese Witherspoon Team Up for ‘Don’t Mess with Texas’
The unlikely duo of Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon will star in the action-comedy Don’t Mess with Texas. The story revolves around a conservative, uptight cop (Witherspoon) who is trying to protect the sexy and uninhibited widow of a drug kingpin (Vergara). The pair experience more than their share of danger and misadventure as they are chased through the Lone Star State by crooked cops and homicidal gunmen.
The cast also features American Horror Story’s John Carroll Lynch, Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Richard T. Jones (Hawaii Five-0), and Michael Mosley, currently starring in the USA series Sirens.
Directing the film is Anne Fletcher, best known for helming memorable hit comedies 27 Dresses and The Proposal.
The screenplay was written by David Feeney (New Girl) and John Quaintance, who has written a number of TV series, including Whitney.
Witherspoon, who is also one of the producers, was anxious to work with Vergara long before the cameras started rolling. According to Vogue: “Witherspoon decided she wanted to make a comedy with Vergara and presented her with several ideas. After the Modern Family star chose this one, they commissioned a script, came up with a budget and a schedule, and then took it to the studios, who immediately started bidding.”
Don’t Mess with Texas is one of several upcoming films for Witherspoon, who can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed biographical drama Wild. Vergara has also enjoyed big screen success in the last few years, most recently in the John Favreau comedy Chef.
Don’t Mess with Texas will hit theaters nationwide May 8, 2015.
