DreamWorks Will Adapt Michael Crichton Novel ‘Micro’
The bestselling sci-fi novel Micro by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton is headed to the big screen, via DreamWorks, which recently acquired the rights.
The massive success of the recently released Jurassic World only adds to the interest in Crichton’s works. Fans will be glad to know that World producer Frank Marshall is producing this project, as well. The author’s widow, Sherri Crichton, along with Laurent Bouzereau, are executive producing through CrichtonSun LLC on behalf of the estate.
The story centers on a group of graduate students who travel to Hawaii to work for a mysterious biotech company and end up being miniaturized. If getting shrunk isn’t bad enough, the tiny scientists are then thrown into the rain forest with no means of protection other than their wits and scientific expertise.
“Michael was exhilarated, passionate and invested in Micro, a story he spent years researching and developing,” said Sherri Crichton in a statement. “It was yet another opportunity for him to explore the clash between science and nature, as seen through the eyes of relatable characters. Michael also wrote in cinematic terms and would be so pleased to see Micro come to life on the big screen at DreamWorks.”
Published posthumously in 2011, Micro is one of the books Crichton was in the process of writing when he died in 2008. Richard Preston completed work on the novel.
In addition to this book, DreamWorks is developing another property by Michael Crichton titled Pirate Latitudes, a historical high seas caper set in 1665. It is about a pirate hired to steal a Spanish galleon and its cargo of gold booty. The manuscript for Pirate Latitudes, discovered among the author’s papers, also became a bestseller.
