Dress for Your Body Type
Athletes of all sizes and shapes have trouble finding clothes that fit. Whatever your body type, it’s important to embrace it. How do I know? Because I dress, style, encourage and embrace athletic men just like you. Whether you’re long and lean like Chris Bosh or short and stocky like Maurice Jones-Drew, use the following tips to feel stylish and confident—like my clients.
If you’re long and lean
Get Your Numbers
Get your inseam measured (from the top of the inside crotch to the bottom of the ankle). Make sure you have your correct waist size and pant length. Choose pants with descriptions like straight, skinny or slim and that have a narrow opening at the bottom.
Choose Layers
Purchase thin, long-sleeved T-shirts that you can layer underneath the jackets and sweaters that you love. Having the right sleeve length underneath a piece will camouflage the fact that an outer layer sleeve may be too short.
Just Roll Them Up
Don’t be afraid to roll up the sleeves of a button-up shirt or to push up the sleeves of a sweater or jacket. All of my clients’ sleeve lengths exceed 38”, so we push and roll constantly!
Size Your Dress Shirts
To avoid a baggy, blousy look around your upper body, purchase button-up shirts that come in numbered neck and sleeve measurements (e.g., 16 1/2, 36), instead of generic sizes like L or XL. That way you will get as close as possible to your sleeve length.
If you’re short and stocky
Stick to Flat Front Pants
Guys with thick legs should go for a flat front instead of pleats. Flat front pants are more stylish and create a leaner look. Opt for descriptions like relaxed, loose, straight or athletic. They’re more flattering to your physique.
Size Your Garments Properly
Increase your pant size by one or even two sizes to accommodate muscular thighs and seat. LeBron James actually has a 38-inch waist, but we often purchase a size 40 or sometimes 42 and have his tailor take in the waist for a perfect fit.
Go Half-Windsor on the Tie
The half-Windsor knot is in perfect proportion for gentlemen whose necks measure 17” or above. A full-Windsor knot will dwarf your neck, and a four-in-hand knot will look too skimpy. Don’t know what they are? Google them. Avoid trendy “skinny” ties.
Sweaters/Tee Shirts
Accentuate your broad, muscular shoulders with fitted tees, henleys, thermals and knit sweaters. Those pieces are made for bodies like yours, because the fabric molds nicely around your frame.
