Watch the Trailer for ‘Drinking Buddies,’ Out This Weekend
The comedy Drinking Buddies stars Olivia Wilde as sexy tomboy Kate and Jake Johnson (of last year’s 21 Jump Street) as her co-worker, Luke. The two work together at a Chicago craft brewery, where they enjoy drinking and innocently flirting with each other—until they realize they might want to become romantically involved, despite both having significant others. Then the irreverent pals suddenly find themselves alone together for a weekend.
The movie is a noticeable departure for director Joe Swanberg. It is much more mainstream than the offbeat projects he is known for, such 2011’s Silver Bullets and 2007’s Hannah Takes the Stairs (with Greta Gerwig). Despite working with a bigger budget and better-known actors, Swanberg still had his cast improvise the entire script, following a rough outline of the plot.
In addition to directing Drinking Buddies, Swanberg also wrote and produced it. Ron Livingston (The Conjuring) and Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) round out the cast. If the quirky, laid-back tone of the trailer appeals to you, check out the movie this weekend in theaters around the country.
