During an NFL Combine Interview, an Atlanta Falcons Coach Asked a Prospect If He ‘Liked Men’
We’ve already discussed some of the strange questions NFL teams have asked prospects during the course of their NFL Combine interviews, but Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple has lent some credence to the absurdity of the whole process.
One of the many teams Apple met with in Indianapolis was the Atlanta Falcons, and the very first question they asked him had nothing to do with football.
“The Falcons coach, one of the coaches, was like, ‘So do you like men?'” Apple said. “It was like the first thing he asked me. It was weird. I was just like, ‘No.’ He was like, ‘If you’re going to come to Atlanta, sometimes that’s how it is around here. You’re going to have to get used to it.”
We’ve heard of teams inquiring about players’ sexuality before, but we hoped it was an anomaly. Turns out it wasn’t. Falcons head coach Dan Quinn issued a statement in which he apologized to Apple.
“I am really disappointed in the question that was asked by one of our coaches,” Quinn said. “I have spoken to the coach that interviewed Eli Apple and explained to him how inappropriate and unprofessional this was. I have reiterated this to the entire coaching staff, and I want to apologize to Eli for this even coming up. This is not what the Atlanta Falcons are about and it is not how we are going to conduct ourselves.”
So, hey, NFL teams, to avoid further embarrassment, maybe let this be the final lesson on irrelevant questions to avoid asking prospects.
