Movie Version of Sci-Fi Game ‘Dust’ on the Way
The popular game and graphic novel Dust, from Italian fantasy illustrator Paolo Parente, is being adapted for the big screen, produced by Dan Lin (the Lego film franchise) for Lionsgate.
The alternate history storyline is set during a version of the 1940’s in which World War II never ended and the world was divided into three separate units: the Allies (U.S.A, Britain and France); a union of the USSR and China known as SSU; and the Axis, which is not led by Hitler since he was assassinated in Operation Valkyrie. A key event in this geopolitical universe is the discovery of a special ore that enables the creation of combat robots.
Rawson Marshall Thurber, who directed the 2013 comedy pic We’re the Millers, will direct the feature. Thurber expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “It’s a cool spin on a genre that I’ve loved for a long time, and it opens up narrative avenues that are just thrilling. It’s all my 9-year-old fantasies wrapped in one thing, a World War II mash-up.”
In addition to upcoming sequels for The Lego Movie and the Sherlock Holmes franchise, Lin is also producing the classic cartoon-inspired Steve Carell feature Acme, due out by the end of the year. Before beginning work on Dust, Thurber will direct Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in the comedy Central Intelligence.
