Dwayne Johnson to Star in ‘Alpha Squad Seven’
DreamWorks has won the rights to the sci-fi flick Alpha Squad Seven, which will star Dwayne Johnson. Little is being revealed about the plot, but the description compares the project to such popular films as Independence Day, Guardians of the Galaxy and Armageddon. It is characterized as a “four-quadrant action-comedy adventure set in space.”
Screenwriters Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer, best known for The Karate Kid 2, came up with the concept for the movie.
Johnson, who frequently produces the films in which he stars, will also serve as a producer on Alpha Squad Seven via his 7 Bucks Productions. Filmmaker Beau Flynn, who has collaborated with Johnson on many features, including Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and new release San Andreas, is on board to produce this project as well.
According to reports, this project has been progressing at a record pace. The studio picked up the pitch a mere two weeks after Flynn and executive producer Wendy Jacobson met with the writers and discussed what, at that point, was just a one-line idea. Johnson was instrumental in fast-tracking the project. The film is intended to be the first installment in a potential motion picture franchise.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding Alpha Squad Seven, it’s anybody’s guest how much time will pass before filming gets under way, considering Johnson’s full slate of future projects. Following San Andreas, he will star in the TV dramedy series Ballers. His upcoming films include the comedy Central Intelligence, the action fantasy Shazam! and possibly two new installments of the Journey to the Center of the Earth franchise.
