Dwight Howard’s adidas Superbeast Sneaker Review
“Superman” Dwight Howard is living up to his nickname this season, averaging 22.8 points and13.8 rebounds per game, prior to the 2011 NBA All-Star break. But don’t be surprised if those stats rise once the Orlando Magic’s “Man of Steel” laces up his new adidas signature Superbeast sneakers.
“Even beasts need weapons,” says adidas basketball category designer Robbie Fuller. “For Dwight’s new signature shoe, we had to not only retool the upper, but focus on redesigning the sole to cope with the power of his game.”
adidas’ new basketball-specific Sprintskin synthetic upper helps lighten the overall weight of this beastly sneaker, but the micro-injected skin is directionally engineered to provide optimum reinforcement during hard lateral movements. “Big men want to be fast too,” Fuller explains. “The lightweight Sprintskin allowed us to subtract the weight of the upper without sacrificing any support.”
The Superbeast also features adidas’ double-stacked Z-shaped Torsion System at the midsole to help reduce the risk of injury. “The system works when you twist the sneaker inward, as it will lock onto itself,” Fuller says. “That allows the ankle to roll and angle in, but then it is hindered from rolling quickly out.”
Finally, D12’s latest signature sneaker has an all-new nano cushioning system for superior comfort. Fuller explains, “This new design allows the rubber to travel up into small pods in the soft EVA sole when there is no force applied on the sole. Then it can slowly compress back to cushion the foot at ground level. The nano cushioning is very personalized to your playing style. If you play on the forefoot, it’s only going to engage on the forefoot.”
