EAS, a leader in performance fuel products, created a unique challenge to show how proper sports nutrition can help make an athlete unstoppable. They chose one person to take on 30 different sports on 30 consecutive days in 30 different cities across America.
The athlete most up for the challenge? Lieutenant Commander Sam Tickle, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot. After serving in the Navy for more than a decade, Tickle now works as a mentor and coach in the U.S. Marine Corps Wounded Warriors Athlete Reconditioning Program, designed to rehabilitate injured Marines through sports and athletic competition.
In preparation for Unstoppable Tour tryouts, Tickle trained two to three times per day. Selection testing took place at the Athletes’ Performance [AP] training center in Carson, Calif., where contestants were put through a series of measurements and tests, including an obstacle course with soccer and football drills. Tickle impressed the AP and EAS teams by excelling at dozens of sporting events.
After receiving the call from EAS, Tickle had just 48 hours to get ready for the Unstoppable Tour. As part of his preparation, he received a personalized nutrition plan featuring EAS products.
Once the challenge began, EAS put Tickle through a 30-day odyssey, in which he woke up each morning not knowing what sport he’d face that day. The sports ranged from rock climbing [see picture above] to football to rowing to the more obscure, like an underwater hockey game called Octopush and a volleyball/soccer hybrid called Sepak Takraw. EAS documented the entire tour, which took Tickle from the coast of Maine to the Statue of Liberty and across the Rockies to the West Coast.
The tour’s intensity increased over time, forcing Tickle to deal with sleep deprivation and physical stress. He took a beating every single day, often in forms completely foreign to him—including a hard fall during speed skating and a rough hit the next day during rugby. Tickle said, “One day you’re swimming; the next day you’re playing basketball; the next day you’re running stairs…Everything had a twist to it.”
One issue, Tickle said, was that “there was no kitchen, no personal chef on the bus, and that’s where all the EAS products came in handy. They were portable.” For example, one of his favorite breakfast meals was oatmeal with raspberries and blueberries, mixed with EAS’ Myoplex banana protein drink. He consumed 4,000 calories per day, including 100g of protein to maintain his muscle mass. He ate every two hours, and his total diet consisted of approximately 55 percent carbs to ensure energy.
After 10 years in the Navy, Tickle was no stranger to pushing his body to the limits. He’d faced many physical and mental challenges before, and he drew upon those experiences to reach new levels of mind and body fitness in the Unstoppable Tour.
