‘Fantastic Four’ Cast Revealed; Michael B. Jordan Is the Human Torch
Fox has found its Fantastic Four! Jamie Bell will portray Ben Grimm (a.k.a. The Thing), Miles Teller will play Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Michael B. Jordan is Johnny Storm (Human Torch) and Kate Mara is Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman).
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the foursome is in the process of finalizing their contracts with the studio. Jordan has long been linked to the role of Human Torch in the reboot. His casting has raised some eyebrows, since the hero is described in the comic books as a fair-haired white male. But the rising star seems unconcerned about the reception he’ll get. He told USA Today last year, “Things change and time goes on . . . The characteristics of the Human Torch are his name is Johnny Storm, he’s charismatic and he’s a playboy. That’s it.”
The cast is noticeably younger than their 2005 Fantastic Four counterparts. Later this year, Teller is set to appear in Divergent, another potential blockbuster, and he was a darling of the critics in The Spectacular Now last year. Bell appeared in 2013’s Nymphomaniac and will reprise his role as the lead character in the forthcoming Adventures of TinTin sequel. And Mara, who is known for her work on Netflix’s House of Cards, is set to appear in Transcendence later this year.
Plot details about the reboot have not been revealed yet. But we’re willing to bet that director Josh Trank, who is known for 2012’s Chronicle, will weave together an interesting story that will pacify most comic purists while appealing to a broader audience.
Fantastic Four will premiere June 19, 2015.
