Foundation for Basketball Success
The game of basketball requires that you be able to change direction and make decisions quickly. This requires focused attention, physical and mental dexterity, and a knack for anticipation (without becoming reliant on it). Basketball players need to possess explosive power and quickness—to accelerate on the first step and to be able to stop (decelerate) at half a moment’s notice.
Alan Stein, head strength and conditioning coach for the Nike Elite DeMatha Catholic High School boys’ basketball team, says that “while the skills of shooting, passing, ball-handling, rebounding and defending are what will determine your ultimate success on the court…your athletic ability is the foundation of your success.”
Stein’s videos below, selected from his YouTube Channel, show some drills that will help improve reaction, mental focus, agility and quickness. Practicing these drills will ensure a longer performance before fatigue sets in.
Hand/Eye Coordination, Focus and Mental Acuity
Perform for 5-10 minutes before every workout.
Reaction Time, Acceleration, Deceleration and Overall Explosiveness
Perform for 20-30 minutes two to three times a week.
Also, see Three Ways to Boost Reaction-Time from STACK magazine’s Back-to-School 2010 issue.
Overall Efficient Movement
Perform for 20-30 minutes two to three times a week.
