Gear for All Seasons
Fall weather can be a pain for an athlete heading out for a long training run, because the temperature can change dramatically without warning. Athletes must choose either to dress warm, and decide how to deal with the outer layers when they heat up, or take a risk and go lightweight—and hope the weather holds. Now there’s a simple solution to the problem: the Klymit Kinetic Vest.
No ordinary cotton/fleece vest, this breakthrough product uses flexible, airtight—yet breathable—chambers filled with argon gas as an insulator, trapping warmth, not air. Argon gas, which is non-toxic, nonflammable and completely safe for both the user and the environment, is the key to the vest’s ability to insulate better than ordinary fabric fibers.
But what really separates this vest from the rest is the wearer’s ability to change the amount of insulation, thanks to Klymit’s NobleTek design. Each vest has a small valve that you can open to slowly release the gas, thereby decreasing the insulation level. Or, if the temperature takes a dive, you can pump more gas into the vest with a KwikShot canister of argon gas (sold separately). It’s worth noting that you would have to carry a canister for long runs in case the temperature drops suddenly.
The design of the insulation pouches is less bulky than a thick jacket, because the airtight chambers form to an athlete’s body. Besides the ability to adjust its level 0f insulation, the Klymit Kinetic Vest is windproof and maintains its warmth when wet.
Klymit vests sell for about $200 a pop (not including back-up gas canisters). This is similar to the cost of a warm running jacket, but the Klymit is a lot less bulky underneath other gear.
