Although the highly anticipated Ghostbusters reboot has been rumored to feature women in prominent roles, news that the cast will be all-female comes as something of a surprise.

According to reports, A-listers Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, as well as current Saturday Night Live castmates Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, have been selected to battle evil spirits in this reboot of the popular 1980’s comedy film franchise. McCarthy, who was known to be in talks with the studio, has officially signed on to play a leading character. The other three actresses are currently in negotiations for major roles.

McCarthy and Wiig would reunite with director Paul Feig, who previously directed them in the hit comedy Bridesmaids, helping to propel them both to big screen stardom.

Feig took over the directorial reins when iconic filmmaker Ivan Reitman, who helmed the first two installments, bowed out. However, Reitman will still serve as one of the producers. Based on the characters created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, the screenplay for the reboot is being drafted by Feig and Katie Dippold, who recently collaborated on the script for another McCarthy blockbuster, 2013’s The Heat.

Aykroyd and Dippold are producing alongside Reitman.

A release date has not yet been set, but he film is expected to begin shooting this summer in New York.
