Giants Running Back Rashad Jennings Drinks This Smoothie Recipe Every Single Day
Rashad Jennings wasn’t supposed to make it this far.
As a running back out of Liberty College, Jennings was the 250th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Small-school prospects picked that late usually have a super slim chance of having long careers, yet Jennings has defied the odds. The dual-threat back is expected to play a major role in the New York Giants’ offense this season after rushing for a career-high 863 yards in 2015.
How has Jennings managed to make it this far? His meticulous diet has been a major factor. Jennings detailed his strict, performance-focused diet in a recent interview with GrubStreet.com. The whole interview is worth a read, but one thing in particular caught our eye.
According to Jennings, he starts almost every single day by drinking a homemade smoothie made with his own special recipe. “Oatmeal, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, almond milk, peanut butter, banana, vegan chocolate, ice, water and protein powder. I make this 355 days of the year. It’s delicious. It fills me up and gives me the right amount of carbs,” Jennings said.

Let’s break down why Jennings’ smoothie recipe is awesome for athletes.
The mixture of ingredients contains both simple and complex carbs, which gives Jennings a boost of long, sustained energy. Every seed in the smoothie is a mini-nutritional powerhouse. Hemp, chia and flax seeds (as well as peanut butter) are all high in protein and fatty acids, which are great for reducing inflammation and building muscle. Bananas are high in potassium (fights cramps and helps muscle function) and vitamin C (protects against cell damage, boosts immune system). Nearly every ingredient in the smoothie is high in dietary fiber, which helps normalize bowel movements, lowers cholesterol levels, controls blood sugar and aids in achieving a healthy weight. The fact that the smoothie also includes water is great, since hydrating in the morning is key for athletes.
When done right, smoothies can be a great way to pack a ton of healthy ingredients into one convenient, drinkable package. If you’re looking for more awesome smoothie recipes, check out the link below.
