Word is out that Jane the Virgin actress Gina Rodriguez will star opposite Mark Wahlberg in the big screen drama Deepwater Horizon.
Based on the tragic events that killed 11 crewmen on a BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, the movie will focus on the survival of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform during what would become one of the biggest man-made disasters of all time.
Rodriguez has been cast in the role of Andrea Fleytas, a 23-year-old navigator on the rig, who was monitoring the safety system just before the catastrophic explosion occurred. Reportedly reprimanded for sending out a distress signal to the Coast Guard, Fleytas later testified that she did not sound an alarm immediately because she had not been trained to deal with multiple warnings.
Wahlberg is set to play electrician Mike Williams.
The picture is being directed by actor and filmmaker Peter Berg, best known for directing the 2014 military action film Lone Survivor.
The screenplay was written by Matthew Sand (Ninja Assassin) and Matthew Carnahan, who currently writes, produces and directs the TV series House of Lies.
Deepwater Horizon will hit theaters nationwide Sept. 30, 2016.
