Stallone, De Niro to Face Off in ‘Grudge Match’
The comedy Grudge Match stars Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro as two former boxers who agree to come out of retirement and return to the ring for one last bout to settle an old score 50 years after the two rivals’ last match.
Considering that both Stallone and De Niro famously portrayed boxers in previous films, the two are a natural choice for this film, which is due in theaters Dec. 25, 2013. The response at advanced screenings has reportedly been so good that the release date was moved up from Jan. 10, 2014 to Christmas Day, when it will face much fiercer competition.
After playing the iconic role of Rocky Balboa in no fewer than six films over the years, Stallone is a natural for the role of aging boxer Henry “Razor” Sharp. De Niro, who was unforgettable as legendary boxer Jake La Motta in Raging Bull, will play Billy “The Kid” McGuigan.
This is not the first time the two Hollywood giants have shared the screen. They also starred together in 1997’s Cop Land.
Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) plays De Niro’s estranged son B.J. who must decide whether he will train his father for the match despite the resentment he feels toward him. The cast also includes Kim Basinger, Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin. Grudge Match is directed by Peter Segal, probably best known for directing Adam Sandler comedies Anger Management and The Longest Yard. The screenplay was written by Entourage creator Doug Ellin with contributions from Tim Kelleher and Rodney Rothman.
