'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Marvel Studios closed 2013 by releasing an image from their upcoming 'Guardians of the Galaxy.'

The picture features the Guardians: Gamara, the alien assassin and adopted daughter of Thanos, played by Zoe Saldana; leader Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt); gun-toting Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista); and the tree-like Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel.

The studio also released a synopsis for the forthcoming film. Peter Quill is at odds with Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) after he steals a mysterious orb desired by the villain. Quill is forced to form an alliance with Gamara, Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer (who has his own issues with Ronan) and Groot to evade Ronan and his minions. Eventually he realizes the orb's true power and tries to rally the team to take a stand for the galaxy and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

Yondu (Michael Rooker), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Korath (Djimon Hounsou), Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) and Commander Rael, a leader in the Nova Corps (Glenn Close), also appear in the movie. We'll also get another look at Benicio del Toro's The Collector, whom we first saw in an after-credits scene following Thor 2: the Dark World.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige spoke with the New York Daily News in October about the risk of making a comic book movie with characters that few moviegoers recognize. He said, "Iron Man was a challenge the first time around. People take it for granted now, but all sorts of journalists were saying Marvel's really scraping the bottom of the barrel. So I'm very comfortable being back in the position of trying to exceed expectations."

Guardians of the Galaxy will be released Aug. 1, 2014. It is directed by James Gunn.
