Rap News Rundown: Gucci Mane, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and Chief Keef
Last week’s Rap News Rundown was filled with drama. Gucci Mane was arrested for the umpteenth time, Kanye was officially charged for allegedly assaulting a paparazzo, Kendrick Lamar and Cassidy reacted to Meek Mill’s diss records, and missed child support payments threatened Chief Keef’s freedom.
Gucci Mane Arrested in Atlanta
Gucci Mane was arrested over the weekend after one of his friends called Atlanta police and reported that the rapper was acting erratically. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, Gucci reportedly began cursing at them and making threats. He was arrested and booked for possession of marijuana, a concealed handgun and disorderly conduct. The drugs and weapon charges will definitely pose a problem for the rapper, who is currently on probation. But signs point to bigger issues at play—police were concerned enough to take the performer to the hospital for a medical check.
The arrest was preceded by a long Twitter rant last Tuesday, during which Mane took aim at his former Bricksquad labelmates and claimed to have slept with a number of female artists, including Nicki Minaj, Keyshia Cole, Fantasia, Ciara and Kelly Rowland.
Kanye West Charged for Paparazzo Fight, Rants Against Corporations
Last Friday, Kanye West was charged with misdemeanor battery and attempted grand theft in connection with his tangle with a paparazzo at LAX back in July. Video of the well-publicized incident that surfaced online shows West attempting to grab a photographer’s equipment out of his hands. The victim has filed a civil lawsuit against the rapper for injuries he claims he suffered during the assault. If convicted of both charges, West could spend up to one year behind bars. An arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 10.
West also made headlines last week after he went on an expletive-filled rant during Pusha T’s album release party. In the show-stealing tirade, the rapper went after corporations, blasted fellow artists for being imitators and bragged about Pusha T’s influence on the game.
Kendrick Lamar, Cassidy React to Meek Mill’s Diss Records
Rappers Kendrick Lamar and Cassidy both reacted to the diss lyrics Meek Mill sent in their directions last week. Meek attacked Kendrick on “Oh Kill Em,” and Kendrick replied during a concert in New York City. “There’s one n**** in particular that needs to realize that there’s really ‘levels’ to this s***,” said the Compton rapper in reference to Mill’s single “Levels.”
Meanwhile, Cassidy made his reply on wax with “Catch a Body.” The song quickly elicited the ire of the MMG rapper due to its reference to his late labelmate, Lil Snupe. “Don’t be talking about nobody that’s dead ’cause when you see me you ain’t gonna talk like that… That’s disrespectful,” said Meek during a recent interview with Jay-Z’s Life + Times.
Chief Keef Held in Contempt Over Child Support Case
Chief Keef is in trouble again due to missed child support payments. He was expected in court last week to explain why he hasn’t forked over the payments, but he failed to show. TMZ reports that, as a result, an arrest warrant has been issued for the entertainer. If arrested, he could be held in jail until he forks over one-fifth of his total child support debt, which is currently around $20,000. An court order earlier this year stipulated that the Chicago rapper pay $2,600 per month in addition to $500 for daycare. He has reportedly paid only $2,000 to date.
