Han Solo Spinoff Film in the Works
A Star Wars Han Solo spinoff movie is currently in the works with The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller on board.
The duo, who were also behind 21 Jump Street, talked about their approach to the upcoming Star Wars movie in a statement, saying: “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
The film is said to be an origin story focused on a young Solo and exploring how he became the thief, smuggler and scoundrel whom Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker first meet in the cantina at Mos Eisley.
The screenplay is being written by Star Wars franchise writer Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon, who is best known for his television writing credits, including episodes of Dawson’s Creek.
This spinoff should not be confused with the upcoming Star Wars origin movie that Josh Trank was previously set to direct. According to rumors, that project will revolve around intergalactic bounty hunter Boba Fett. Following Trank’s departure, producers are still in search of a new director.
No word yet on who will play Solo, but The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, has floated some interesting possibilities, among them Tye Sheridan, Miles Teller, Nicholas Hoult and Chris Pratt.
The still-untitled Han Solo film is scheduled to hit theaters May 25, 2018.
