A controversial and explosive documentary, currently in the works at HBO, will expose secrets of the powerful, star-studded Church of Scientology.
Based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Lawrence Wright’s 2013 book, Going Clear, the film was actually set up for production two years before the book was published.
Over the past few years, the church, characterized by some as more like a cult, has been much maligned in the media by former members and critics of its methods. The HBO film is expected to offer startling revelations about scientology itself and about some of its most famous celebrity followers, including Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
Details of the documentary are still sketchy, but some of the allegations in the book concern physical abuse and even imprisonment within the church.
In addition to Travolta and Cruise, who have been members for decades, many other celebrities call themselves scientologists, but some of its high-profile members, such as Katie Holmes and Leah Remini, have recently parted ways with the church.
Going Clear is scheduled to air in 2015.
