HBO Picks Up ‘New World’ Pilot from Creator of ‘Orange is the New Black’
HBO has picked up a pilot for a Salem witch trial drama titled New World, by Jenji Kohan, creator of the hit series Weeds and Orange is the New Black. Kohan wrote the pilot with Bruce Miller (ER and recent sci-fi drama The 100) and actor/producer Tracy Miller (Dark Blue). Miller will also serve as a supervising producer. HBO will co-produce the series with Lionsgate TV, one of the companies responsible for Orange is the New Black.
Directing the pilot is Oscar-nominated filmmaker Gus Van Sant, best known for the megabit Good Will Hunting.
Set in New England, New World promises to be an intriguing period drama about events surrounding the 17th Century Salem witch trials.
Kohan will also be executive producing alongside Van Sant, as well as Kohan’s longtime collaborators Tara Herrmann and Mark Burley.
Filming of the pilot episode is set to begin in Boston this spring.
