5 Health and Fitness Apps to Stay Motivated
When my schedule gets hectic and making it to the gym seems daunting, I have a secret to staying motivated and focused on my health—and it fits right in my pocket: my iPhone. (Check out STACK Approved: Apple iPhone 5.) These days, there is no shortage of mobile health and fitness apps. The only challenge is identifying the right ones for your lifestyle. There’s an app for power-walkers looking to track their routes, runners training for a marathon and people looking to zen out their minds and bodies. (See also STACK’s Top 10 Health & Fitness Apps for Athletes.) Here are a few my favorite health and fitness apps, the ones that keep me motivated and empowered.
Runtastic
As an ultra-marathoner and running junkie, I’m always in need of a partner who can keep up. Although I rely on Runtastic mainly for running purposes such as mapping my route and setting my ideal pace, the app offers a wide variety of services for sports-enthused individuals, from cyclists to skiers.
MyFitnessPal
MyFitnessPal is my go-to accountability app for maintaining my day-to-day diet. The app has an extensive food and nutrition database, unlike any other in the health tracking space. It even integrates with a host of other health mobile apps, making it easy to keep track of what you’re putting in your body.
Strava
Well-loved within the cycling community, Strava is all about making fitness social. It caters mainly to cyclists and runners. With this GPS-enabled app, you can track your progress, map your route and channel some of your competitive juices by challenging your friends. Another perk? It’s ad-free!
Pocket Yoga
This app is geared toward bringing you a peaceful and sweaty yoga workout, and it’s great for all levels of practitioners. Pocket Yoga provides a combination of poses, durations and difficulty levels to choose from. It even instructs you how to breathe!
The Nike Training Club
This popular app delivers custom workouts and acts like a personal trainer. It offers the ability to choose a workout based upon your own criteria and provides step-by-step instructions and demonstration videos for each move. The Nike Training Club also allows you to track your progress and share your results to keep yourself motivated.
