Schwinn and Olympian Summer Sanders Launch "Helmet on Heads" Campaign

Learn about the Helmets on Heads campaign and hear from Olympic gold medalist Summer Sanders on the importance of wearing your helmet.

Helmets on Heads

As an athlete, you put your body at risk for injury every day. Broken limbs, pulled muscles and sprains are all painful, but with proper care, they heal close to 100% in a matter of months. Brain injuries are entirely different.

Head trauma is a leading cause of death among teens. Every year, 1.7 million people sustain a brain injury, and many of them come through sports. Although you may wear a helmet for football or baseball, you may never consider one when you hop on your bike, skateboard or snowboard.

In an effort to get you to change your mind, Schwinn Bicycles, ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation and former Olympic gold medal swimmer Summer Sanders have joined together to launch Helmets on Heads.

Through this initiative, Sanders travels to various communities to coach teens, kids and parents about helmet and bike safety. She says, "If you want to be sure you're able to play your sport and hold on to any memories of the special moments in your life, wear your helmet. It isn't necessarily the worst hit or the worst crash that causes the worst injuries.  Most accidents happen close to home."

Sanders' involvement with Helmets on Heads is a role she takes seriously. She says, "I am very passionate about Helmets on Heads and extremely honored to be working with Schwinn on this campaign. I am a mom to a 4- and 6-year-old who love to bike. I speak to the kids as a mom, Olympian and a casual bike rider."
