Seventeen-year-old Andrew Shapiro is breaking Guinness World Records.
A high school junior, Shapiro performed 7,306 Pull-Ups in 18 hours, breaking three Guinness World Records—for most Pull-Ups in six hours with 3,515; most Pull-Ups in 12 hours; and most in 15 hours. Shapiro started doing Pull-Ups at 8 a.m. Saturday and continued into the wee hours of Sunday morning. The record for most Pull-Ups performed in a 24-hour period was held by Czech Republic athlete Jan Kares in 2015. He performed 6,800. Shapiro matched that number at the 15-hour mark.
Shapiro was inspired to achieve these feats by watching his favorite show, American Ninja Warrior, in which contestants run through a difficult obstacle course. Shapiro’s dad also inspired him. After battling colon cancer for five years, the young athlete’s father is now cancer-free and in remission. With Shapiro breaking world records, he helped raise $4,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Shapiro gave up playing baseball for a season to focus on Pull-Up training. As part of his training, he did 10 Pull-Ups per minute for six hours straight. He also ate sushi and pineapple while watching Star Wars and X-Men.
Shapiro wants to eventually be a contestant on American Ninja Warrior, but he will have to wait four more years, since the show requires contestants to be at least 21.
“I’ve always liked challenging myself, so I’ll add this to my résumé as a person for American Ninja Warrior,” Shapiro told the Washington Post. “I figure they won’t say no to someone who has the world record for Pull-Ups.”
