Balancing on a physioball when performing a Plank is tough. So imagine the skill and coordination displayed by NBA star Michael Carter-Williams when he kneels on a physioball and performs a Shoulder Press.
Sound tough? Well it is.
In the video above, Carter-Williams performs the Physioball Balance Shoulder Press with relative ease—a testament to the athleticism that has made him a lethal point guard in the NBA. Kneeling on the physioball improves his core strength, balance and body control. Adding the Shoulder Press increases the difficulty, forcing him to maintain stability while performing an overhead movement—which is important for improving his shooting accuracy in traffic and helping him stay strong when driving to the rim.
Yes, MCW is strengthening his shoulders, but that’s not the primary focus of the exercise. It’s a full-body integrated movement, not one that increases shoulder strength and size. That can only be done effectively on solid ground.
Although this exercise looks cool, you shouldn’t just run to your gym and try it. Carter-Williams has likely been doing it for years under close supervision, and balancing on a physioball while holding a weight can be dangerous if you’re not careful. If you insist on doing it, make sure you have a spotter.
