According to VH1’s 2006 reality TV show, “I Love Toys,” the Hula Hoop is the number one toy of all time. The Duke lacrosse team might beg to differ. After watching the Blue Devils perform the Hula Hoop agility drill, we’re pretty sure they’d line up against the folks at VH1.
Under the guidance of Randall Dorvin, Duke’s lacrosse S+C coordinator, players use the drill to work on body positioning and quickness. “I want them to keep as much speed as possible [while keeping an] upright posture,” Dorvin says.
Hula Hoop
• Construct a large hoop with four 10-foot pieces of PVC pipe [2-inches around]
• Align two sets of cones 10 yards from the hoop and opposite each other
• Starting at one set of cones, run all the way around the hoop to the opposite set
Sets/Reps: 1×4, then change direction
Coaching Points: Run on edges of your feet when circling the hoop // Maintain upright posture with slight body lean // Don’t exaggerate inward lean
