‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Trailer Released
During Comic-Con this past weekend, Lionsgate offered the first real look at the upcoming Hunger Games sequel.
The below clip hints at the changes that society has undergone since Katniss won the last game and gives us our first glance at Finnick Odair (portrayed by newcomer Sam Claflin). It also suggests the general plot outline: the downtrodden now have hope but the Capitol has devised a way to stamp it out. The 75th Hunger Games, also known as the Quarter Quell, will only draw from previous years’ winners. The stakes are higher and the chances of survival are slimmer.
But, it seems Katniss won’t mind returning to the arena. During the Comic-Con panel, Jennifer Lawrence described her character’s fragile state of mind at the beginning of the movie. “She’s struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder after the Games while living in Victor’s Village, where she never wants for food, and feels useless,” said Lawrence. “She’s adapting to a new life.”
Gary Ross, who directed the first movie, will not return for Catching Fire. Francis Lawrence has been handed the reins, and Lawrence spoke highly of his work, saying, “Francis is absolutely wonderful. He’s a really great guy and incredible to work with, and I’m so excited about everything that he’s done with the movie. He also has a really great way of getting Josh [Hutcherson] and I to behave, kind of like a father, where we don’t know that he’s getting us to behave until after it’s done. He’s really sly about it.”
Catching Fire will open in theaters on Nov. 22. Mockingjay, the final book in the trilogy, will be filmed as two separate movies.
